Your First Hammam in Paris: What to Expect

Published on 24 July 2026

Never tried a traditional hammam? This visitor's guide walks you through the ritual step by step — steam, black soap, the kessa glove scrub — and what to bring for your first visit in Paris.

The hammam ritual, explained

The hammam — sometimes called a Moorish or Moroccan bath — is a centuries-old purification ritual built around humid heat. Unlike the dry, intense heat of a Finnish sauna, a hammam envelops you in warm steam at around 40–50°C, which gently opens the pores and prepares the skin for what comes next.

A full ritual unfolds in stages: first the steam, then an application of black soap (a soft olive-based soap rich in vitamin E), then the signature step — an exfoliation with the kessa glove that lifts away dead skin and leaves you with what regulars describe as the softest skin of their life.

What actually happens during your session

At Bain Foch, the Signature Hammam ritual lasts 50 minutes: time in the steam room, followed by a full-body black soap application and a professional kessa scrub performed by a practitioner. You lie back — there is nothing to do but relax. If it is your first time, tell your practitioner: pressure and pace are adjusted to your skin.

Longer rituals add a rhassoul clay body wrap and a massage of 30 to 60 minutes. Everything can be booked solo or as a duo, side by side — the duo formulas are among the most requested by couples visiting Paris.

What to bring — and what to expect afterwards

Bring a swimsuit; towels and hammam essentials are provided. Avoid a heavy meal or alcohol beforehand, and drink water after the session — the steam makes you sweat more than you notice.

Expect your skin to feel remarkably smooth for days, and expect to sleep deeply that night: the combination of heat and scrub relaxes muscles at a level few treatments reach. Many guests plan their hammam for the evening before a flight home — it is the best souvenir you cannot pack.

Where to experience it
